Compaq servers can also be purchased with Linux on them right? Compaq is now part of HP so you'd get all that Linux expertise with it. Compaq servers are, from what I hear the best choice for servers out there. We have a few here and I got to say, I wish I could afford one. I tend to agree here. Dell wants to be on the Linux bandwagon, but only if ... Kind of like the guy sitting on the fence to see which of two fighting groups gets the upperhand. I think they are going to commit to being Linux supporters ... someday. For me that day may already be too late and bringing too little with it. For a guy who started out working out of a college Dorm, he's become entrenched and tunnel-visioned. Not to mention arrogant. (Heard this guy speak lately? I talked to him once, one on one, at a convention in Vegas. I came away feeling cold, with a bitter taste in my mouth. I haven't liked the idea of owning a Dell since. But that's what's great about a free society, everyone is free to choose.)

Right, but only certain models, and they do not provide linux support for the rest of their line. They try to have things both ways; take advantage of the Linux trend but don't put the work into really supporting it. _______________________________________________ Kclug mailing list [email protected] http://kclug.org/mailman/listinfo/kclug

FWIW, HP also sells the "HP Compaq nx5000" laptop with SuSE pre-installed. There was a review in LJ in the Jan 2005 issue.

I think Dell wants to get in on the Linux trend/bandwagon if doing so makes sense to their bottom line. I don't think I'd want to pay 10% more on the price of a server for extra support.
Maybe if Dell pre-installed SuSE Professional they could include an option for purchasing extra support through SuSE at a discounted rate. Or ditto with RedHat.

Have worked on half a dozen Compaq servers over the years, I rate them Gateway Servers and that is not very highly. During the era when I was working with Compaq hardware, everything was proprietary. If a drive failed or a stick of RAM failed, they had to be replaced with Compaq parts. And those parts failed on a regular basis.
I worked in an HP shop for a little over a year and their equipment was outstanding. Service was awesome. I was extremely disappointed when Compaq and HP merged, fearing that HP would be brought down to Compaq's level.
I've been working on Dell hardware at work, exclusively for the last six years and have been extremely pleased with it. I was running Linux on hardware from Dell before they supported it with very little problems.
In our racks we have almost a dozen Dell servers running RHELAS with no issues whatsoever. In our development environment, we have seven Dell boxes running some version or another of Red Hat or Suse. Some of these boxes are approved by Dell to run Linux, others aren't and all of them work without any problems at all.
As for service from Dell, I've never had any bad experiences (knock on wood), so far. I've had two disks fail in the last couple of years and they have been replaced in short order.
If you're looking to run Linux on server hardware, Dell is rock solid.
