For all you laptop enthusiasts out there:
I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 with the back light gone out. I have been quoted $350 for parts and $50 for labor. Would you guys think that this is a fair estimate?
TIA
Tim
No. 2 possible parts, power inverter or bulb. Power inverter can be found for ~ $70.00, bulb should be ~ $50.00 could be a fair bit more like $100.00. Would take a decent tech on average an hour to replace, $60.00 per hour.
I have NOT called Dell for the bulb price. Could be much higher however, inverters go out more often than the bulbs.

Is that backwards? $50 for a dis/reassembly of a laptop display sounds very cheap to me. A backlight tube and/or inverter shouldn't cost $350, but a new LCD panel might. I'd do some work and check to see if they are just quoting a cost of a modular replacement for the LCD panel, and not just the tube/inverter. Just the tube(s) and inverter would cost a lot less than a whole panel, but ht labor would go up. I've pulled tubes before and it does take a lot of disassembly, but they are significantly cheaper to replace.

I'm no repairman, but $350 sounds pretty high for the work that's involved.
I replaced the inverter in my Inspiron 8600 just last year. I bought the inverter from Hypertech<I think>, it was about $45. It's very simple to replace if you can take the display apart. I actually replaced the bulb first w/o luck, it took a little more work though.
If the screen is just extremely dark, and you can still see the shapes of windows and such, then its just the balast or bulbs. This is very common in laptops. It's usually the balast. I'll buy this http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Dell-Inspiron-9200-9300-9400-lcd-inverter-LTN170W-B_... only mark it up to $200. I'll even install it for free. :-P Or you can probably do it yourself, and save $350.
