hplip has been under very active development and cleanup lately, the latest release was this past weekend. That, and strong activity on linuxprinting.org and cups means that things are getting a lot better with regard to printing in linux.

That said, I upgraded my Mandriva workstation, and now no matter what I do I can't print to it from my wife's workstation - although my laptop prints to it just fine.
