Repeat after me... Hot-swap is only safe on drives that are sold as Hot-swap drives. Usually SCSI, but I have heard of other methods. That's a quick way to burn up the controller chip on the HDD circuit board. I have seen it happen. Nice sparks and sometimes flames when they go.
