I was wondering, would it be possible to run ipv6 on my local LAN? Could I run a mixed environment? That is to say have ipv6 on the LAN and have ipv6 and ipv4 on the firewall/gateway? Would ipv6 on the LAN provide the ability to further enhance security on my LAN PCs?
Thanks,
Brian Densmore

There is very little reason, from a security perspective to move to IPv6 on a local lan.

how about IPX? or DECnet? And how about on a VPN?

Ok I'm confused. How does IPv6 pertain to these? And no offense, who still uses IPX and DECnet?

IPX and DECnet are both available to compile into the linux kernel, I'm not certain how one would set things up to switch all your apps to using tcp/ipx and so on.
the security goal on your lan is to frustrate someone who gains access to your wire. By using a non-standard transport layer (is that the right layer?it's been years) one could raise the bar just another little bit.
I agree that it would be more trouble than worth.
