If these really are first generation Pentiums, you may want to consider making them dumb terminals using one of the Linux Terminal Server projects. You'll have some trouble with graphics, but you may get a lot more mileage out of them.
Also, I believe that Surplus Exchange has special deals for not-for-profit's, and they have a batch of CD drives I took them a while back.
