Sounds like a candidate for impact testing, I tested mine and found motors, a bunch of nifty gears, and some parts to experiment with. Actually the printer was dying anyway, so when it croaked, I salvaged the motors for a school project, but it was impact tested in the approved "Office Space," method.

It's not only HP! We bought a Lexmark all in one, just to use as a stand alone fax. Original cartridges work great. Just don't refill them.
You will get a message stating that you are not using an approved cartridge. The machine will still print but you must reset it after each fax or copy.
A real pain when you get 15 to 20 faxes a day!
