Gentoo user here. What kind of NIC do you have?
Run /sbin/ifconfig and see if you have eth0 up and running.

cannot access using the Gentoo install CD.
I use adsl-setup and enter all required information but when I
attempt adsl-start it times out. I have the correct DNS information from SBC.
