Which vga server was that? vga16 or svga? Try using the svga server. Who makes the Video7 card? Or, is that, the maker's name? Did you try the Video7 server that is available? As always, it depends on how fast you want it and what you want to do w/ it. I continue to stand behind Mepis (SimplyMepis) for a general desktop distro that you can try out as a LiveCD first. Under the hood it is Debian, so adding software and updating will be fast and easy. It will work fine in 128MB of Ram. If you want it to be a server too, you can apt-get what you specifically need or go ProMepis when it comes out. I use Libranet on my server which is also Debian based. Are you really looking for something compiled -O3 for your CPU? If you really want Gentoo, use the installer that has some stuff pre-compiled for your arch. I think it is a stage 2 or 3 install. Good luck with that, not for me. I do wish that Debian had an i586 and/or i686 repository. I wish I knew how much improvement one could expect from this. You might want to try Arch Linux. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=arch Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is lightweight and contains the latest stable versions of software. I haven't used it, but it seems to combine some pluses that Slackware and Gentoo users tout with an update system similar to Debian. YMMV Whatever desktop distro you choose, you will see a large speed improvement by using a less resource hungry window manager (i.e. not Gnome or KDE). Try IceWM, Fluxbox, etc. Brian Kelsay

Look for a vga_v7 or vga_v71024i driver. Or you could get the kdrive x-server drivers. So, what exactly is the question? How to hack into a Linksys router? How to access the admin menu? What is the default password? How to set the port 8000 to open? Or all of those? My question to you is did you have your network card set to DHCP? Did you give it time to connect and get a LAN address or did you just plug in and boom, put in the ip of the router? When I bring my wireless router to the LUG meetings, sometimes it takes it a few minutes for it to connect to the LAN and get it's own IP and internet connection going, then people that connect to it, directly or via wireless, it may take it a minute to broadcast it's DHCP info to your card. Try to "ping 192.168.1.1" before you try to go to the webpage to config it. That will verify that you can reach it. Have you had any problems with your cable? Maybe try another or try a different port on the back of the router. Sometimes the ports go bad. Make sure you are not connected to a port with the uplink label and if that is the only one open, then turn off the uplink switch or pick a different port and unplug someone. Maybe they don't use the default IP addressing scheme with 192.168.1.1 as the router address. Try to "ping 192.168.0.1" or "ping 192.168.2.1". Cheap Linux-compatible printer?

Basically I'm wanting to set up a home Linux printer server just so I can say I've done it once. I'm looking around for a $50 or less printer which is Linux compatible (I'd take "DOS compatibility mode") or even has Linux drivers. The printers I've been able to find in that range (Canon, HP, Lexmark) all seem to have neither DOS compatibility mode nor Linux drivers. I have about $50 to spend so I won't be able to take advantage of "this is the price after a mail-in rebate" pricing. I'd take a used printer if the cartridges aren't too hard to find and/or too expensive. ===== And I always thought: the very simplest words Must be enough. Hi Johnatan, No, I didn't gain access to the linksys router at the store on broadway. I must have looked pretty foolish. I thought it'd be easy. I plugged an Ethernet cable into their router and typed 192.168.1.1 into a browsers address bar. I expecting an authentication dialog box to pop up and happily accept my user name and password, just like it happens on my home network, instead I received a "connection failure," type error message. Next, I tried turning on Airport(I was using a powerbook)to access the Internet.
