Hmmm... this is disturbing a function that does something when the software is not installed rather than complain that the software isn't installed. This sounds like a flaw to me. Should send a comment/bug report to the Debian Reiserfs pkg maintainers about a lack of dependency. Unless of course mkfs is able to make/format many filesystem types, whether installed or not. If you try to use jfs or xfs, please check that the tools for that filesystem are installed before hitting the panic button. ;-) 42. NIST Amusements

Someone on IRC yesterday pointed out an interesting phenomenon that made it to some news services today. > This wouldn't happen to be ONE file of size >4 GB would it? ope, although the file system claims its 3.6 and namesys's webpage declares that file size limits are ludicriously large, on the order of a terrabyte because of the page cache. This actually matters because in the future I might be buying myself a TV capture card, where these things matter, as I suspect you know. So, a bit of a status update. I did as BillC suggested and made a single partition 200GB in size. Strangely, I still get the same error =( Slightly different df though (irrelevant parts cut out): Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 195352432 4124212 191228220 3% /mnt/reiser Cfdisk displays a single partition of type Linux ReiserFS, which seems appropriate. This is getting a bit annoying, copying things back and forth to test a 4 gigabyte limit. I didn't bother messing with the block size this time, and just used a straightup 'mkfs.reiserfs /dev/sda1' And I still get no space left after about 4 gigabytes! Justin Dugger

Storage drive problems

I brought this up around noon today on IRC, but I guess everyone was out to lunch =). I've recently formatted my shiny new SATA drive as ReiserFS, to try out a few new filesystems out. Since it was a 200GB drive, and I plan to use it mostly for storing large files, I thought it might be a bit faster if I used a larger block size, I used 4096 (although I'm not sure what the default is, at the time I assumed it was 1024). If you're interested in specific hardware details, I've attached the output from the program lshw. Beware that it isn't entirely accurate; one part I've noticed that's wrong is the socket type on my CPU. Anyways, my problem and reason for posting this is that I can't seem to store more than about 4 gigs on the drive. I can't create or move files to the drive. Example: jldugger@jldugger:~ $ mv lshw /mnt/reiser/ mv: writing `/mnt/reiser/lshw': No space left on device Some extra diagnostic information: jldugger@jldugger:~ $ df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hda1 9410184 7957780 974388 90% / tmpfs 518296 0 518296 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda 195355016 4126812 191228204 3% /mnt/reiser jldugger@jldugger:~ $ du -sh /mnt/reiser 4.0G /mnt/reiser So, any ideas? One person suggested that I might be out of inodes, but it turns out that the standard tool didn't work (it listed all zeroes for total, used and free inodes on reiserfs). Justin Dugger

Configuring History ksh93 on FC2

Hello All I have downloaded ksh93 from the ATT download site and am running it on top of FC2. The only issue I am having so far concerns history. Under bash, something has been set up so that if I use the UP arrow key, the bash shell scrolls through the .sh_history file from last entry to first. In a similar manner, the DOWN arrow key navigates from the next entry in .sh_history. This behavior is not working under my ksh93 implementation though the hist shell built in is working. So, my questions are: * Does anyone know how the bash shell sets the UP arrow (and DOWN arrow for that matter) keys to cycle through the .sh_history file? * Does anyone know how I might be able to reproduce this behavior under ksh93? when do you really need a 64bit cpu?

when do you really need a 64bit cpu? So... I pose this question. When do you really need a 64bit CPU <other than the obvious potential need of a megasever needing the address space>? Most of the folks I know that have an Opteron or Athlon64 do not have any 64bit specific software, except maybe the Linux kernel compile. The Duron and Athlon32/Barton both seem to be replaced by the single Sempron32.
