What LiveCDs are we bringing to ITEC?

I looked back through the emails and it appears that people are ordering or (hopefully) have received the following LiveCDs: 300 Kubuntu 300 Ubuntu and someone was told to order 300 Mandriva One CDs. Does this sound right? I'm working out which graphics to put on a big sign saying "Free Linux CDs Here!" If Mandriva One CDs are arriving then I'd like to stick the Mandriva logo on the poster too. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! It is refreshing to see the LUG conversation turn toward a positive image for Linux by means of leaving out the negative. I still believe the best means of evangelizing an idea was used by Larry Wall as he first began telling others about the Practical Extraction and Reporting Language. Larry was a regular on the shell scripting discussions, and obviously knew shell scripting very well. Rather than simply introduce Perl as "better" than shell scripting, with no proof, thereby creating contention where there was none, he began answering shell scripting discussions in the following manner: He first answered the question with the shell script solution. Then, at the close of the email, he wrote: "But here is the Perl way of doing the same thing," and casually gave the Perl solution. He left it to the reader to make an informed decision. I firmly believe this is the reason that Perl has always had an excellent reputation, across the board. As we do this with Linux, its credibility improves, because people see us as able to competently answer tech questions, as well as casually offering a better solution, rather than seeing someone to contend with. Such patience takes time, but the perfection of patience is a friend, convinced of his own free will. -Jared

It takes more patience to advocate Linux in a positive light only, but in the end: 1. Linux is attractive to people who are patient. 2. Linux is unattractive to people who are impatient. (Are you sure you want to cater to the whole Windows userbase? Why not simply harvest the more patient ones?) 3. Linux will be associated with a continually positive message, not fear, uncertainty, and doubt like others. (I.e. we recognize FUD when we see it, but we do not propogate it.) 4. People who like to contend will have nothing to contend against but themselves, and Linux will quietly watch its adversaries beat each other up as they all learn how to be . . . quiet and patient, like Linux. Let the binary "We're better than you" message remain in the hands of those who like to contend. Linux is not "better"; that's a competitive marketing term, and Linux is built by and for engineers, not marketers. Engineers are patient, know quality when they see it, and need no marketing to convince them. In short, let the "Linux viruses" thread be a quiet gift given to people who actually adopt Linux. Keep it in the unwritten portion of the Jedi manual, so we stay away from the dark side. :-) -Jared

Organizing for ITEC

I think we should start discussing what will be brought to the ITEC booth. For example, I'm bringing a PIII-600Mhz 256MB RAM system designed around home and home office use. It is running Debian Etch (testing), with OpenOffice.org 2.0, the Gnome desktop, sound, video playback, and a bunch of other things to delight young and old. I am only bringing the one system as I do not have a LCD monitor. I was thinking of bringing a sign listing all of the known Linux viruses (anywhere from 14 to 40 depending on where you look; Wikipedia only lists 14). Is 11" x 17" too big? In addition to Live CDs, shall we (I) do up T-shirt transfers or other giveaway items to entice people into the booth? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Linux spyware: Fact or Fiction?

Once I finished a reasonable "Known Linux Viruses" poster, I thought it would be interesting to create another poster on the same lines saying "Known Linux Spyware". Instead of a list, there would be a big "?" in the middle of the poster. To make sure that this was a reasonable claim to make, I went looking on the Internet for any mention of spyware for Linux. Webroot's annual "State of Spyware" report hasn't listed any, ever, but Wikipedia makes an uncited claim that there is spyware for Linux and Mac OS X. The fact that there are no Linux anti-spyware applications makes me think that someone is trying out some spyware FUD on Wikipedia's Spyware entry. Sure, there is malware software, and I'm advised to run "sudo chkrootkits" in Ubuntu forums, but spyware that just loads itself onto your Linux computer without permission? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Out of Work

The WISP that bought out the corpse of my former employer doesn't have room for another tech. I've got a week old copy of my resume that doesn't include any details about my current contract, but I can be out of here with a week's notice or less.
