moving home/second home

Had a drive that was failing, it was on a system that was dual boot with a screwed up windows registry. I haven't booted windows on it in two years, so I booted into Linux and transfered everything that was needed to be saved to my samba server. There is one big directory that I want to save on multiple machines (all my ripped cd's, I don't want to have to go through that again) and was wondering about adding a second drive and another home partition on it, or do I have to move the whole home partition? Sounds to me like you should draw yourself a diagram of what each group of files has for permissions, what are all the users and groups involved and their effective permissions. Quite possibly you may just need to add the virtual domain admin users to some group or add user apache to the virtual domain group so the apache process can write. Do the php pages have to write anything to the virtual domain directories? Even if it's just a log file, then that user is denied. Do all of the virtual domains wrote to the database? I didn't understand that part. If so, then for one I wouldn't do it that way. They should each have their own database. Also, if you have this: rw-r--r--, then the group can't write only the specific user, but you may need to add the user you run the database as or the php process in somewhere. Hell, I'm confused now. PHP safe mode on virtual hosts

Help! I'm working on a website that is on a server with over a dozen other virtual hosts. SAFE mode is turned on in apache. I've diffed two similar sites and can't figure out what the issue is. Google hasn't illuminated me, either. Here's the problem: one site works if the files in the chrooted /var/www/html directory are owned by a authorized admin for the virtual host, the other works only if that directory and the files are owned by root. Both sites make use of a directory in the chrooted /usr/share tree which is owned by root (this is the PEAR database routines). The site that doesn't work gives me a SAFE MODE access error and the other does not. The php.ini files are identical and the apache config files are identical except for the site names and names of the chrooted directories (each is named for it's own set of chrooted directories). If I change the PEAR directories to match the UID of the site that is broken then I get DB errors. I'm at the end of my rope trying to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. KDE install on Gentoo Stage 3

How do I keep emerge kdebase from looking for the internet but instead /gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles/? I performed a Stage 3 Gentoo install and now want to install GUI and applications that I have on CD. There is a tremdous amount of information about networkless Gentoo installs but nothing on the rest. Thanks! Rick

Using Gimp to print part of a page in a .pdf file

Got a tough nut to crack here --- all you power gfx users out there, gather around while I tell you a tale . . . . I had a fellow ham copy an instruction book for me -- and he scanned two pages at once per file page, and I'd like to edit it somehow, and enlarge that part to full page size for printing. The original book was designed for people with microscope vision. Doing a Yahoo search, there's a program for Windows (one moment while I toss my cookies) that converts it to a jpg file. So far, I've tried the pdf to jpg conversion, and all I get is the first page. There has to be some means of advancing through the pages in the pdf file to get the rest. Maybe there's something in the Adobe Reader program that might do that. If not, there should be . . . . . Gary Hildebrand St. Joseph, MO

Does Xpdf, Open Office or KOffice allow you to open pdf files in edit mode? I was pretty sure that one of these does. I think you still need to have ImageMagick installed because it is used on the backend. Gentoo Linux and webcams

I've got a Gentoo Linux server at home. It isn't running XWindows but it is running Apache 2. Currently I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 webcam setup on it running the PWC drivers and palantar software to serve up the cam pages. For a peek at it go to: http://jserver.dnsalias.net/GardenCam/index2.html Or http://jserver.dnsalias.net/GardenCam/index.html for a video feed and watch the grass grow. I'm not happy with the quality of the picture. The colors are off, the picture is washed out and faded, and the resolution is horrible. Is anyone else currently running a webcam? Does anyone have suggestions on something better or someway to improve picture quality?

OT: Apple and Intel

Guess it's sort of the bombshell of today: Apple is dropping IBM chips and moving to Intel.
