Secondary Slave

Computer Setup: Primary Master: Hard Drive Primary Slave: Nothing Present Secondary Master: Hard Drive #but no hard drive was presenting when trying to boot to cd. Secondary Slave: DVD Player I was trying to boot from the cdrom and it wasn't showing up in POST just the primary master hard drive. So I took the PM Hard drive out and just let the secondary boot by itself worked like a charm. I got it to work with the the below setup. Is this just me or does the bus not get scanned if a Secondary Master is present? Kinda weird I would think it would. This is probably the first time I have tried to boot from SM not present. Kinda weird though either way. If a drive is set to SS and no SM is present, then there is no drive to be the second part of the drive controller. The Master drive in any chain controls the flow of info to the Slave. When you set a drive to Slave, you basically turn off that feature of any drive and give over control to the Master in the chain. The reason I don't trust CS is when working on another person's box. If it is one I set up and it hasn't been messed with, then they will be set correctly and at the right point on the cable. Sometimes people will plug a drive set on Master, into the Slave plug on the cable rather than take the time to move drives around so the cables reach or get a longer cable. you may or may not believe some of the goofy stuff I have seen done inside PC cases. Yep, that's what my current configuration is. PM : HD SM : CDRW w/o speaker hookup SS : CD/DVDROM w/speaker hookup Now if I only knew how to connect the speakers in such a way as to be able to let either one use the speakers. Some of the basic soundblaster cards have multiple inputs, all SB Live! cards do. Most motherboards w/ on-board sound have more than one input also. They started adding the extra ports for PC telephony, you know hook your modem to the sound card. When people started getting CDRWs and DVD drives, the inputs grew from 2 to 3. Repeat after me... Hot-swap is only safe on drives that are sold as Hot-swap drives. Usually SCSI, but I have heard of other methods. That's a quick way to burn up the controller chip on the HDD circuit board. I have seen it happen. Nice sparks and sometimes flames when they go. Who's up for roasting marshmallows over a Quantum Fireball as it goes out in a blaze of glory? Brian Kelsay

I've had problems with setups like this: PM : HD PS : CDROM SM : none SS : CDRW [note this was by accident and I changed the jumper to make SS into SM to fix] PM : HD PS : none SM : present but not detected SS : CDRW [I fixed this by moving the CDRW from SS to PS] PM : HD PS : none SM : CDRW SS : HD [see above, also was able to fix by setting HD to CableSelect mode] I think the problems I had were due to a flaky HD. So the short answer is: no it's not just you. I think that some HDs are just flaky. What brand of HD was it? Mine was either a Conner or Seagate or WD. The PM being a Quantum Fireball. Of course it's also best to *not* mix HD brands, or even oftentimes product lines.
