donating hardware to that daycare - update

Sorry if this seems redundant .- my files from the last attempt went up in electrons when Starband crashed- /me learned lesson and has offline backups of mail NOW - and we have new members since the last time I tried this - SO consider the rest of this as both second attempt and to the newcomer's a new project - thanks in advance ! Recently I attempted to organize collecting about 4- 6 systems for a not-for-profit daycare center . The person involved with it is a close friend of my family AND this is an opportunity to get the little ones exposed <infected> with Open Source systems in their mundane lives . Thinking of having the Penguin familiar to preschoolers ! SO any one wishing to transfer about half to 3/4 of a Geo Metro load of workable for preschoolers if we load Linux on it stuff ? Call me voice at 816-632-5710 or leave mail to coordinate this - I'd love to make this a xmas gift! An installfest may be premature ? concept is making these boxes be appliance operator Linux- Xandros seems a bit heavy footed or any suggestions ? The desired result is a " plug it in and use it " experience . MANY of the staff at this daycare have ZERO windows learning to unlearn so we have "fresh meat" Can we make anything of this project ? Out-of-band OS installation

I would like to build software packages for a variety of Linux distributions on the same computer. One way to accomplish this might be to have a directory hierarchy like the following: /dist /fecoracore1 /fecoracore2 /fecoracore3 /redhat80 /redhat90 /suse90 /suse91 where "redhat80" contained an entire Red Hat 8.0 distribution. It would then be a simple matter to chroot into one of the directories, update SVN, and start building. Assuming that I didn't want a separate partition for each distribution, how would I go about installing them? One way would be to install into a staging partition, then tar/rsync/pax/cpio'ing it into the preferred "dist" directory. I'd rather not have to bring the system down each time I install a target OS, however. Is there a standard method for doing an install similar to Solaris' "Live Update" for the different Linux distributions? This would be pretty straightforward under Gentoo, since its installer program is a bash prompt. Is such a thing possible with Red Hat, Fedora, or SuSE?

I want to get the debian dvd verion (because the only media i have is 1 dvd+r). Startup niggles (Mdk10.1/KDE)

Two little things are bugging me: I took my SMB mounts out of automount and put them in /etc/fstab, and they've been mounting just fine until recently. Some update of samba or something means they no-longer mount at start-up, I have to do a "mount -a" to get them. fstab entries are: //mercury/iso /mercury/iso smbfs credentials=/etc/samba/auth.mercury.apollo,fmask=777,dmask=777 0 0 In KDE, I had knotes running as an applet in the system tray, but I accidentally quit it and now I can't get it back. I can get an application button that launches kontact in notes mode, but not the knotes hot button. (MDK10.1, KDE3.2.3.mdk)
